How to Prevent and Treat Dry Winter Skin

Practical tips for preventing and treating dry, flaky skin during winter.

How to Prevent and Treat Dry Winter Skin

Cold air holds less moisture and indoor heating strips humidity, attacking your skin barrier from both sides. Winter skin problems are preventable with the right adjustments.

Gentler Cleanser

Switch from foaming to cream or milk cleansers. Avoid hot water on your face. Lukewarm water is sufficient for effective cleansing without additional dryness.

Layer Hydration

Apply hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin after cleansing. Follow with a richer moisturizer containing ceramides, shea butter, or squalane. Apply while skin is still slightly damp. Use a humidifier in your bedroom aiming for 40 to 50 percent humidity.

Protect and Reduce Exfoliation

Apply thick balm to lips before going outside. Use heavier hand moisturizer. Wear gloves. Sunscreen remains necessary as UV reflects off snow. Reduce chemical exfoliation frequency as a compromised barrier is more vulnerable. Adjust your routine proactively before dryness becomes severe.
